Life gets messy—plans can fall through at the last minute, emergencies arise, and you may need support to ensure your pet(s) remains safe during the chaos.

FTLOA will provide temporary foster care to pets whose families are doing all that they can to avoid rehoming or surrendering their pets due to unfortunate and unforeseen circumstances.

In the case of a loved one's death, FTLOA is also happy to intake the late parent's pet(s), pending space. Eventually, the animal will become available for adoption, if deemed eligible. Otherwise the animal will remain a permanent resident in our on-site sanctuary so that they may always have a loving home.

Program Benefits

01

No Costs for Parent(s)

The program is funded by donations and the community's use of our Pet Care Services to reduce the family's stress and financial burden.

02

Home-Styled Foster Care

Our Foster Care program is kennel- and cage-free. Fosters are housed in private dwellings with all the accommodations of home and routine one-on-one love from FTLOA's staff.

03

No Time Restrictions

Accepted fosters are provided care for as long as it takes for the family to settle into a space that is safe and secure for all family members, including their beloved pet(s).

04

Emergency Care Included

Animals get sick, and can be injured. FTLOA will ensure fosters are routinely examined by a licensed veterinarian and provided the appropriate preventative health care. Emergency medical care will also be handled by us at no cost to the family.

05

Enrichment

All animals benefit from enrichment, as it engages the mind, stimulates the senses, prevents boredom that can lead to destructive behavior, and it can support natural instincts and behaviors. FTLOA recognizes the value of enrichment, and will regularly provide it in different forms to support each animal's overall health and wellness.

Our Foster Care program is currently open to all residents of southern Vermont. Depending on resources and space, we may be able to aid pets whose families live further away.

For those interested in utilizing our Foster Care Program, there is a Foster Inquiry form that will need to be completed.

Please note that submitting the inquiry does not mean FTLOA will be able to provide foster care, as our space and resources are very limited at this time. However, in cases when we may be unable to directly help, we will still offer our support through other regional connections and organizations.

Our Foster Care program is entirely funded by the local community. Through donations—both monetary and in-kind—and through the use of our Professional Pet Care services, YOU are making this vital program possible.

FTLOA believes it is through the strength of our community that we can make a great difference to the lives of the animals in need within our neighborhoods. By loving your pet, we get to love and support so many more!

Current Fosters

Yuno and Willow

These beautiful girls arrived to our home-based facility on 02/07/25 after we received an emergency request for intake. Due to unfortunate circumstances, the owner suddenly found herself homeless and needing to find a safe space for her beloved cats until she can get back on her feet. Faced with surrender as the only option if unable to find foster placement, mom was reasonably distraught and panicking. We are so glad we can help. Yuno and Willow now have a large, safe, warm space as their own until they can be reunited with mom.

Our First Foster

Cleo

The Foster That Started It All

Through a mutual friend, Cleo's mom and Kendra were able to connect and arrange for Cleo to be fostered. While with the not-yet-dubbed Fur the Love of Animals, Cleo became the kitty crush of Kendra's male cat, Orin. It didn't take long for Cleo to settle into our home zoo, becoming a family member even if for only a short while. Cleo now lives happily back with her original people, and she continues to be loved by us.

Cleo ignited our founder's passion for foster care. She came to live with us in February of 2023 and stayed for around three months. Due to unfortunate circumstances, the new house her family was in the process of buying fell through at the last second, and they had already sold their old home. This left her humans to scurry about like spooked mice. While they were able to obtain temporary housing, it did not allow for a cat. Cleo's mom was devastated and doing everything she could to avoid re-homing or surrendering her to a shelter.
